Goliaths, for example, have useful traits like Stone's Endurance, which allows them to shrug off injury, and Natural Athlete, which gives them proficiency with Athletics. Each of them also have unique abilities that give them an edge. Goliaths, Tritons, Minotaurs, Loxodon, and Centaurs are also prime choices because of their stat boosts. Half-Orcs are especially good because they not only have the Menacing and Savage Attack traits, but they have Relentless Endurance as well, which allows them to bounce back from zero hit points and gain one hit point so they can go on fighting beyond the possibility of death.
Orcs and Half-Orcs make excellent Barbarians as well because they both gain an automatic +2 STR and +1 CON, the two most important stats for a Barbarian build. Because Humans gain +1 to all of their ability scores, they are a fair choice, especially if building the stereotypical Barbarian inspired by Conan or drawing inspiration from animal totem associated folklore. There are an abundance of racial choices when building a Barbarian, so there's room to take some of the more aesthetic factors into consideration. It also doesn't hurt to boost Wisdom for this particular Barbarian because it will strengthen their connection to the natural world around them through important skills like Animal Handling, Survival, Perception, Insight, and Medicine. Since Barbarians tend to be rather large in many cases, they may appear awkward and clumsy, but a decent DEX modifier will make them Stealthier and more limber. DEX works well with their Athleticism, too, determining how graceful their movements and attacks are. Because of this, CON determines how well they stand in the face of physical adversities - even their own alcohol consumption after a hard night of partying in the local tavern.Īfter STR and CON, focus on Dexterity, which boosts their armor class, especially when they are unarmored.
